Sobre los autores

Karina Reiss nació en Alemania y estudió biología en la Universidad de Kiel, donde recibió su doctorado en 2001. Se convirtió en profesora adjunta en 2006 y profesora asociada en 2008 en la Universidad de Kiel. Ha publicado más de sesenta artículos en los campos de la biología celular, la bioquímica, la inflamación y la infección, que han sido reconocidos internacionalmente y han recibido prestigiosos honores y premios.

Sucharit Bhakdi nació en Washington, DC, y se educó en escuelas de Suiza, Egipto y Tailandia. Estudió medicina en la Universidad de Bonn en Alemania, donde recibió su doctorado en 1970. Fue investigador posdoctoral en el Instituto Max Planck de Inmunobiología y Epigenética de Friburgo de 1972 a 1976, y en el Laboratorio de Proteínas de Copenhague de 1976 a 1977. Se incorporó al Instituto de Microbiología Médica de la Universidad de Giessen en 1977 y fue nombrado profesor adjunto en 1982. Fue nombrado presidente de Microbiología Médica en la Universidad de Mainz en 1990, donde permaneció hasta su jubilación en 2012. El Dr. Bhakdi ha publicado más de trescientos artículos en los ámbitos de la inmunología, la bacteriología, la virología y la parasitología, por los que ha recibido numerosos premios y la Orden al Mérito de Renania-Palatinado. Sucharit Bhakdi y su esposa, Karina Reiss, viven con su hijo de tres años, Jonathan Atsadjan, en una pequeña aldea cerca de la ciudad de Kiel.
